Is it really that easy to get immediate expert consultation any time you ask for it? Well, not always. There are some drawbacks to deal with. But, don”t let that stop you! There are far more benefits than drawbacks to using forums.

First order of business, you have to find a forum that is interesting and/or valuable to you. For example, let’’s say you”re into ice fishing. Do a Google search for “ice fishing forum.” (If you don”t know how to do a Google search, you need more help than I can give you. Sorry!) Google will direct you to a site at http://www.icefishingchat.com/ That was easy right? Now just find the link on the site for “Forum.” Next click on the “FAQ.” That would be “Frequently Asked Questions,” of course. This whole section comes out to about 10 pages. You can read through the whole thing in maybe 15 minutes. This will be time well spent! (I like to print these things out and read them on the train.)

With the knowledge you gain in just 15 minutes you are “good to go,” using hundreds of forum entries to advance your knowledge about all things ice fishing! You can, and probably should, start out using forums “passively.” Search the forum posts, discussions, and threads to “pick the brains” of ice fisherpersons around the world.

There are some drawbacks to using forums as I mentioned earlier. Not every one posting on forums is an expert. Perhaps they have their own agenda, beyond just sharing with you their knowledge of ice fishing. As you use forums, you will learn to judge the value of opinions offered to you. Maybe you have acquired some skills in making these judgements already.

You should never feel as though you must actively participate in Forums. Especially at first, it is very common for “newbies” to just kind of watch from the sidelines. Many people, in fact, never do jump in at. It’’s perfectly OK to remain a silent partner in Forums.

The fact that most people are passive observers of forums is related to another drawback, of course. You might wait days for a response to a question you”ve posted. Someone out there might have an answer for your question, but just doesn”t feel like sharing it. How frustrating!

It’’s a fact of life that the majority of people are observers, not active participants in activities that might put them somewhat in the public eye… even on the internet. And whats wrong with that? As my Mom often reminded me, “It takes all kinds!”

If you prefer to remain a passive participant in forums, at least at first, more power to you! If you become more engaged as you become more comfortable in the format, that’’s great too.

Passive participation in Forums can be very valuable, rewarding, and extremely educational. Now, if only we could now discover a way to master the passive acquisition of MONEY on the internet. Wouldn”t THAT be interesting
